From the press release for the show on March 9th:

“Adam’s mission to take down organized crime on the Island goes sideways when deadly chlorine gas he was using to bait a big fish falls into the wrong hands.”

WTF? Really, WTF? Have the writers totally exceeded themselves in coming up with an utterly absurd idea? (Aside from the fact that Adam escaped from his middle-of-nowhere prison…)

I first read this quickly, I thought that maybe Adam exposed himself to chlorine gas because he was cleaning the toilet in his house since Kono is not there to take care of this and accidentally mixed bleach with ammonia. (Yes, this is sexist, but this is in keeping with the usual writers’ attitude.)

OK, I got that wrong. But who or what can you “bait” using CHLORINE GAS? Chlorine gas is REALLY obvious (not to mention dangerous) if it’s in the air and can kill you very quickly!

Hmmm, maybe the evil yakuza boss Hideki has a fish pond full of koi, and Adam is trying to “bait a big fish” so Hideki will be sad that one of his expensive fishies has been stolen or killed? But Wikipedia doesn’t say anything about how koi are attracted by the presence of CHLORINE GAS … they are more interested in “a wide variety of foods, including peas, lettuce, and watermelon.”

If “big fish” means someone like Hideki or an even “bigger fish to fry” (heh heh), then you would probably try to “bait” them using 1) a large-breasted nymphomaniac or a well-endowed hunky guy (depending on the sexuality of the “baitee”); 2) bags (lots) of money; 3) bags (lots) of fentanyl which can be sold at a huge profit; or 4) complete and utter power over the entire universe (something which Adam would be hard-pressed to produce, I suspect).

Oh well, at least this gives me something to get excited about (NOT) as far as next Friday’s episode is concerned…

Right Grave, Wrong Body is 1 episode that I'm glad was brought up in score and the like. Very solid episode. The Identity Kit gets a workout. A strong Cioffi performance HPD man trying to find the stolen gun. Watson plays excellent villains and great in this role. This is an underrated episode as Classic HFO has so many top shelf ones. What are your FAV moments in Right Grave, Wrong Body? JC

It does sound like that particular composition of “The Long Wait” that’s on the official soundtrack is from LEOPARD ON THE ROCK, even though it was first heard in ONE FOR THE MONEY. It actually starts at the :35 second mark on that track. Before that we actually hear the “Cocoon” theme from the pilot that I mentioned in my earlier post, when Hennessy and later McGarrett are suspended in the Cocoon.

Hi, Inglewolf, I haven't heard from you for about 6 years! Send me an e-mail (link at bottom of discussion forum page) so I have your current e-mail address.

I doubt if any of the season sets have the "Play All" option other than the one you mention. I checked the second and third seasons, and the only "All" option has to do with the Episode Promos, which continues up to the 9th season.

After that, there isn't a "Play All" for the promos. I don't know if there were any promos for the last three seasons. You can see some of the disc menus for seasons 10-12 here:

THE LONG WAIT was also heard in the second season episode, LEOPARD ON THE ROCK, when the daughter of Savang was preparing and almost shoots Kono.

This is the original Mort Stevens composition as heard on the Five-O soundtrack album.

H50 1.0 FOREVER, I just remembered that "The Long Wait" also plays at the end of "Right Grave, Wrong Body" when Five-O is moving in on Charles Cioffi in his apartment as he's watching them from his upstairs window. Is that the season 7 episode you're thinking of or another one?

Sorry, I never unveiled my stars for A Gun For McGarrett. Would give this episode a strong 3.5 out of 4 stars. In accordance with Mr. Mike's 4 star system. It was a Classic episode to me for several reasons. Marnie the art shop owner was very beautiful and sweet. She was the perfect "Gun 4 McGarrett." It was an intelligent plan. Savage also excelled his role as the criminal mastermind. He was 1 of my FAV villains with his accent. It's also a good Frank episode. His informant with his info helped the case to find who was behind it. One of the diuscussion forum regulars made a salient point months back. He/she wondered if McG picked up that Marnie and Savage had similar accents. Can't remember if McG vocalized this. Marnie did ask McG some questions at dinner but it wouldn't be that out of order. Learning about someone like a 1st date. There's a scene I missed before when Marnie takes a cab. Five-O team doing their surveillance. She meets Savage which ties them together. Question Of The Day: Do you enjoy Season 4 or Season 5 Classic HFO more? JC

Hello and Happy Today. I'm a LONG-time visitor to this site who finally clicked on the link and was pleasantly surprised to see the discussion seems to be for Classic Five-O. That for me is still the ONLY Five-0. Maybe I'll get into this new Five-0 a couple of years after it goes off the air--that's when I first got into Jack Lord Five-O.

I only quick-scanned the first two pages so forgive me if my question has been answered before. It's about the DVD box sets of which three different ones appear on Amazon. Do any of these box sets have the Play All feature for ALL the seasons? One thing I've always been disappointed with the original DVD releases is that only the first season has Play All. I just like to drop a disc in and have it play in the background while I putter around the house and garage, as well as overnight (I'm one of those who can't sleep without the TV on!).

This question came to mind as I just picked up the 'Cannon' complete series--for only $30--and this series does have the Play All feature.

Anyway, looking forward to participating in the discussions, if I'm welcome.

H50 1.0 FOREVER, that piece of music towards the end in “A Gun for McGarrett” where Steve drives up Marni’s driveway is indeed on the original Five-O soundtrack. It’s called “The Long Wait”. I always loved it and always thought it was played in “Cocoon” when McGarrett is outside the warehouse at nighttime before he gets captured by Wo Fat and the net thrown over him. But apparently that scene doesn’t really have any music. The season 1 episode where this music does play however is “One for the Money” where Charlie gets ready to stab himself and is looking into that book and making the markings where exactly he needs to stab himself. I’m sure there must be other episodes where this music was played but I can’t remember.

Mike - excellent forum and awesome reviews! Glad that people were able to get their 2 cents in on the Blu-Ray episodes.

I just rematched Follow the White Brick Road and saw some interesting tidbits..The Navy ships used were numbered 1062 (The "Whipple";) at sea and 1057 (the "Rathburne";) in port. Both were Knox class frigates and commissioned in 1970. The Rathburne was eventually used as a target during an exercise in 2002 and the Whipple sold to Mexico, according to their Wikipedia pages. I know it's not the best source but it's a starting point if anyone would like to read further.

I'd also give "A Gun for McGarrett" 3.75/4.00 and for the same reason that Ringfire gave. It's excellent, and it is one of my favorite episodes, but Savage would have been more effective if he had been more intimidating, say as intimidating as Sig Meer was before his untimely demise.

Also like Ringfire, I very much like the music in that episode, especially a Morton Stevens composition that is heard as McGarrett drives up Marni's driveway. It appears on the 1969 LP and is also heard in one or two other episodes after its first appearance in Season 1.

What I would really like, even though it is not relevant to the Blu Ray project, is a compendium of the music by composer and by the episode(s) in which it appeared. What a time-consuming, labor-intensive project it would be! But the results would be well worth the effort.

“A Gun for McGarrett” is one of the best from season 7, so I’d give it either 3.5 or 4. How about 3.75?? That’s better! :) I’d give a perfect 4 to “A Bullet for McGarrett” as I prefer that one. Ivor Barry as Savage was a fine British villain but he’s no Eric Braeden as Dr. Paul Farrar who could really mess with your brain! Plus I love the Richard Shores score for that one.

Thanks for the Classic Hawaii Five O forum regulars and others who voted for the Classic episodes. It was a very impressive list for the Blue Ray. Hawaii Five O easily goes 100 episodes that could be considered. Some episodes in my personal Top 10 are Engaged To Be Buried, The Ninety-Second War Part I, Didn't We Meet At A Murder?,King Of The Hill, Highest Castle, Deepest Grave etc. I'm amazed how strong a Season 9 is 200 episodes into the series. Big fan of Double Exposure #200. Question Of The Day: On Mr. Mike's 4 star system, how many stars would you give A Gun For McGarrett? JC

I think what Mike is doing regarding the Blu-Ray is great, and let's just trust his process.

Imagine a Five-O Blu-Ray of "best episodes" gets released, selected by this little forum!

That would be cool all by itself.

Nitpicking elements you don't feel are "perfect" is useless and counterproductive.

I, for one, hope it comes out this year!

Not to sound cranky or anything, but I already sent my pal at CBS Home Entertainment the results of the "potential Blu-Ray episodes" poll which was really only the opinions of a dozen hard-core fans. I will mention the commercial bumpers to him in my next e-mail; I had to update links to these on my main WWW page (which weren't working) so I can show him exactly what I mean.

Now a can of worms has been opened by the issue of isolated music tracks. I already told my pal about this and he suggested it was a good idea, but it's not like he is the only decision-maker there. There are lots of people that this all has to run through, i.e., someone to determine if the prints are in good condition for a Blu-Ray remastering (seriously -- this came up during our conversation), other people to determine if the music tracks are available isolated from the dialog and sound effects, what their condition is, people from the legal department to determine what the music rights are, people from the design department, blah blah blah ... it goes on and on, there is bureaucracy at all levels! I don't want to annoy my pal by sending him stuff every couple of days because someone gets a McGarrett-like brainstorm about something else which should be included.

We don't want something like a video release connected with the show's 50th anniversary to fall into the category of "Five-O projects which drag on for years," because the 50th anniversary will only happen once, THIS YEAR!! (In fact, the 50th anniversary of the showing of Cocoon, the pilot episode, in a movie theater in Honolulu is TOMORROW!).

Some examples of Five-O projects which never got realized (yet) include a biography of Jack Lord, the publication of which has been discussed for what seems like an eternity; another biography of Lord written by some guy from Southern California which goes back an equally long time; and a video biography of Jack Lord which was announced about three years ago. This last item involved a lot of research and interviews, there was lots of enthusiasm and optimism about it, etc., etc. But I heard recently that the whole project has fallen off the cliff (I'm not going into details). Some things connected with this video bio project sound like a goddamn X-File!!

Coming soon to a bookstore near you:

https://mcfarlandbooks.com/product/jack-lord/

"Before his rise to superstardom portraying Detective Steve McGarrett on the long-running police drama Hawaii Five-O, Jack Lord was already a dedicated and versatile performer on Broadway, in film and on television.

"His range of roles included a Virginia gentleman planter in Colonial Williamsburg (The Story of a Patriot), CIA agent Felix Leiter in the first James Bond movie (Dr. No) and the title character in the cult classic rodeo TV series Stoney Burke. Lord’s career culminated in twelve seasons on Hawaii Five-O, where his creative control of the series left an indelible fingerprint on every aspect of its production.

"This book, the first to draw on Lord’s massive personal archive, gives a behind-the-scenes look into the life and work of a TV legend."

According to the publisher's web site (above), it says it will be released in the "spring 2018."

Amazon.com's site says it will be available March 1st, but elsewhere in the description, it says it won't be published until April 14th.

The book is 277 pages long.

First of all, we need to establish our aim and audience.

Is our aim to create something for us, in which case we can eliminate themes that already have been made available, or is it to create something to preserve the show, its episodes, characters, actors, music, composers, etc. for posterity?

Is our audience existing H50 fans or those who aren't familiar with the show?

Until we answer these questions, we really won't know which episodes and themes to recommend be included on a 50th Year Anniversary DVD.

I suggest we establish a committee of no more than three to answer these questions and make the final decisions for inclusion based on, but not necessarily limited to, the lists so far submitted.

“Cocoon” does indeed have a great score by Morton Stevens, a lot of which would be used over the course of the series (especially the early seasons). Some of the more memorable tracks we already have from the official Five-O soundtrack, like “The Floater”, “Call to Danger”, “The Chase”, “Interlude”. These are all from “Cocoon”. But some other great pieces are missing, like the actual Cocoon theme for when we see Hennessy and later McGarrett suspended in the Cocoon. Or when McGarrett is digging around the bowels of the U.S.S. Arcturus which leads to his discovery of the Cocoon - some fine suspenseful cues there. Or when Chin Ho is on the warehouse roof towards the end across from the ship where McGarrett is being held by Wo Fat. Or the cue that plays when McGarrett dukes it out with Miller (Andrew Duggan) at the end. Would be nice to have those.

Same with “A Thousand Pardons” - another great score. Mr. Mike has the famous cue from that episode - when McGarrett arrives at Yoko’s apartment to question her about Anna and later when Simms arrives in his Jeep at night to Yoko’s place to collect the money.

“Hookman” is easily the best score of the series! However we already have the full score. Mr. Mike already has it here on his site, broken up in multiple chunks. I even recorded all the music from the episode (using my iPhone lol) and compared with what Mr. Mike has and confirmed that he does indeed have all the music passages from the episode.

Maybe we could pick some more obscure episodes that contain great music that is not available anywhere. “I’ll Kill ‘Em Again” comes to mind because it has that great unsettling opening number when Eddie arrives in his car and then climbs up the balcony to the victim’s residence. I haven’t seen that cue anywhere. Not on Mike’s site and not anywhere on YouTube.

Richard Shores did great work on “Forty Feet High”, “And a Time to Die”, and “3,000 Crooked Miles to Honolulu” but those cues are all available both here on this site and on YouTube. However his music for “Wednesday, Ladies Free” and “Journey Out of Limbo” is not available anywhere. Both have that great Shores theremin sound - for when Tanaka paints the girls’ faces and when Danno has his flashbacks, respectively. Also “One for the Money” has a lot of creepy Shores music, some of which was first used on THE WILD WILD WEST - like that droning/buzzing mechanical sound at the beginning when Charlie enters the girl’s apartment or when he kills the woman in the garage. Or the music when he reminisces with Aunt Martha before he kills her. Also from WILD WILD WEST.

At this point, I would just LOVE to have the music feature on THE PILOT, A THOUSAND PARDONS- YOU’RE DEAD, and HOOKMAN. That would cover the Stevens Emmy Nomination for THE PILOT as well as the series only two Emmy Wins.

If you would, I would sincerely appreciate you forwarding this info to your friend at CBS as a follow up and thanks again!

The first season DVD of the original show has a documentary by Emme Tomimbang dating from the mid-1990s which is sort of a "history lesson." Emme did another show in 2010 which focused on the remake. Unfortunately, there is a bit too much of Boy Wonder in this show as well as a lengthy chunk about Mark Dacascos who was playing Wo Fat. On the other hand, the late Jimmy Borges as well as Al Harrington and Kimo Kahoano make an appearance. I don't think this show could be edited to include on a 50th anniversary disc.

I have mentioned the isolated music tracks to my pal at CBS Home Entertainment, he says he will look into it. But there are various levels of decision-making which have to be run through. I have updated the commercial bumpers and few other video things on my home page in the section DANNO, FIGURE OUT THE BASIC M.O. because some of the links there were not working properly, by the way.

Totally agree H50 1.0 FOREVER!! The native, island actors is what helped make H50 the classic that it is. Great scripts but also so many actors who lived in the islands gave it the authenticity. Their real life backstories add even more realism. Especially how Kam Fong worked at Pearl Harbor during the attack and being former HPD.

Yes, it should be discussed. Quality of the episodes and the music included should be paramount! Consideration should be given to the impression each makes on people who are unfamiliar with the show and the events going on at that time. For example, in the hippie / drug episodes, a narrator needs to lead into the show with an explanation of what those times were like: make love, not war, the whole bit.

Including bumpers is a great idea! An advertisement or two for the show might be included; e.g., Jack's previews ending with "Be here! Aloha!" These things are important. as well.

If possible, there should be something telling a bit about the actors who portrayed the major characters. Herman Wedemeyer was stranded on Kaua'i when the Japanese attacked O'ahu and had to remain there, helping to defend that island against potential attacks, for two weeks before he could return home. Kam Fong lost his first wife and family when a friendly plane crashed into their home during the war. The list goes on and on. These were very interesting people, aside from their characters.

Really think Bells Toll at Noon deserves a spot -- strong acting all around, great attention to detail (the re-created scenes from the old movies and the film-editing equipment), innovative transitions (like the 78 record still turning at the end of the song, silently cutting to the "wave" outro for the commercial break w/o the usual "cliffhanger" music -- Great directing all around by Jack Lord!

Also would be nice to see some special features on the BRD, like the entire documentary that there are parts of, floating around youtube.

Glenn from Orlando sez "I’m sad no one has mentioned A THOUSAND PARDONS - YOU’RE DEAD."

Chicken sad too, man, that he totally overlooked this titanic ep. Like Danno sez when Mary Travers got offed "You want me to say I blew it. Alright I blew it!" Harry G's Sgt. Simms an awesome Five-O nemesis, a vicious, sadistic psychotic. Love that pool room scene with McG & The Sarge (gonna keep comin up that hill) as well as Kono Dragnettin James Hong's nervous, shaky records clerk ("I don't know - what could be wrong.";) Not to mention contender for all-time best Five-O babe, the lovely Miss Barbara Luna. Great actin and investigatin all round!

That settles it Mr. Mike – our anniversary junket can’t jus be all celebratin & carousin – we gots to be sequestered in some hotel conf room with loads a Kona coffee & malasadas debating n settlin on these top eps, brudda.

Also sad to hear bout John Nordlum. Really dug his work takin that Navy reservation beat down from awolee John Mala. Director cut that just right so you only catch a quick glimpse a that curly hair and then it morph back to Steve-O comin up that hill. John gots to have been an awesome dude for our man Jack to bestow the Merc on him. Rest in peace, brudda.

Hey Ringfire - Chicken down with the gritty Five-O. Can't tell ya how much Chicken dug da Season 4 when Ise last screened it. Highest Castle, No Bottles, 3,000 Crooked Miles, Ladies Free and Candy & a Gun be quite a line-up to open the season, man. And Two Doves ain't bad neither. Yeah, the Five was really rollin by Four, babeee!

And my votes for the ep runoff:

Just Lucky, I Guess
Painted Daisies
Deathwatch

And me & Glenn votes for “Thousand Pardons” Mister Mike! Gentleman: Any mo votes for Thousand Pardons?

Surprised no cats picked “Welcome to Our Branch Office” which was the inspiration for the current Five-Zero.

Hi Mike,

I do understand all of that. What I will say that if the theme is to be included on the Blu Rays (which I assume it will) then I would think that CBS could include some additional music. After all, the lawsuit is regarding the use of the FIVE-O theme.

Perhaps, you could just ask your friend at CBS directly if the Isolated Music is possible or not and we can clear this thing up once and for all and we can put it to rest:)

You can't really compare Five-O with The Twilight Zone, because there were at least five LPs and CDs of music from the Twilight Zone released years ago. The LPs, all of which I own, were released between 1983 and 1985, in fact. Releasing this music was likely much easier to do because there were no issues with rights, lawsuits, etc. such has plagued the release of Five-O's music. There were also isolated tracks by Jerry Goldsmith and Morton Stevens on the DVDs for the TV series Thriller, though that was not released by CBS or Paramount, but by Image Entertainment.

Like I was saying previously, CBS could at the very least include the Isolated Scores for the two Stevens Emmy Winners and the Pilot.
That would not be two much to ask for and in my opinion, add so much more value to a 50TH Anniversary Blu Ray set.

Having some episodes on Blu Ray is nice, but adding some of the very special extras like what CBS did for the TWILIGHT ZONE is what would make the set truly great:)

http://fiveohomepage.com/5-0log2.htm#39

(Don't expect this to be on a 50th anniversary DVD or Blu-Ray, by the way...)

There was a rumour that a show from the "next" season of Five-Zero was also banned, but this is not true. I have investigated:

Viewer discretion is advised! :!devil:

A couple of things; I get the strong sense that this is the final season and not just because of expiring contracts. The storylines are already giving fans closure - early in the season we saw the "future" Steve and Danno and their famalies so we already know how they all end up. Secondly, the scripts themselves seem lacklustre and even the budget seems trimmed with fewer "big" pyro-scenes. Finally, there's the actors themselves who now seem to just be wlaking through their parts. I also suspect that the "more mature" Steve McGarrett is due more to the fact that O'Laughlin's had enough of the dives, rolls and fistfights that have left him bruised and hospitalized in the past and less to do with character development. Even his new haircut is likely due to another project he completed while on hiatus. It's been a great run, though!

If we do get a confirmation about the go-ahead with the isolated music tracks then I imagine our list will change to include those episodes with the most memorable scores, not necessarily the best episodes. For instance “Forty Feet High and It Kills” or “And a Time to Die” (both by Shores) or “The Late John Louisiana” and “Ten Thousand Diamonds and a Heart” (both by Ray) or “A Thousand Pardons - You’re Dead” and “Death is a Company Policy” (both by Stevens) - these are all strong episodes yet probably not strong enough to be included in my top 24. Yet in this case I would include them because of the scores. It would be awesome if we could choose the 24 best scored episodes but I doubt they would provide an isolated music track for all 24 episodes. I guess they might agree to do it for a few, but we would have to know how many is “a few” so that we know how many to choose.

Todd, I agree. “I’ll Kill ‘Em Again” is not only one of the finest Five-O episodes but also one of the best hours of television, period! Great score by Harry Geller too! I think it’s weird that “Highest Castle” and “Full Fathom Five” and “Cry, Lie” are on the list but not this one. In fact I prefer the episode where Duke gets framed over “Cry, Lie”. Just a more elaborate and exciting episode!

In fact I think I prefer “I’ll Kill ‘Em Again” over “Draw Me a Killer”. Eddie Josephs is a more creepy and memorable villain that Arthur, who’s basically just a slob kid who’s obsessed with comics. Eddie is a more calculating and vicious criminal, very ego-driven.

OK, if they can get 5 episodes on a Blu-Ray disc, then we have exactly 30 (6 discs x 5). BUT ... if they can only get 4 episodes, then we have to have a run-off with the episodes which got 4 votes as follows:

And they Painted Daisies on His Coffin
Beautiful Screamer
Deathwatch
I'll Kill 'Em Again
Just Lucky, I Guess
One Big Happy Family
The Bells Toll at Noon
The Young Assassins
We Hang Our Own

You have to vote for these again, and ONLY CHOOSE THREE EPISODES.

This run-off will close on WEDNESDAY, FEBRUAR?Y 14TH.

If you voted originally or you didn't vote at all originally is irrelevant to me. If you don't vote at all in this run-off, that's too bad! I gotta get this info to my pal at CBS Entertainment. So please VOTE NOW.

I agree that Oporta really shot himself in the foot by revealing his “sure-fire” (LOL!) method of disposing of the bodies. He should have kept Peter Yano’s disappearance a secret, like all the others. As far as I could tell Yano was the last one standing in his way, so I’m not sure there was any reason to send a message to anyone. Still a superb and gritty episode!

Nordlum might not have been the ideal stunt double for Lord but he was perfect as Selleck’s double!! They look almost like twins standing side by side. Isn’t it interesting how Lord’s super powers were in his wave-curling hair and Selleck’s were in his mustache??? No wonder no evil could prevail against them and they always came out on top! There is power in them follicles!! :)

Oporta in "No Bottles" wasn't very bright IMHO. He had a foolproof plan in disposing bodies but allowed it to be discovered. He was too full himself and wanted to send a message. Show those dissenters who didn't follow him or give him allegiance. Some good things about "No Bottles" Oporta was an oily character. I was glad to see McG apprehend him. It also was good to see a brave female character. She went right after Oporta. He killed her boyfriend. Feinberg usually plays interesting characters and I liked him as the operator of the big lift. It was suspenseful when McG could have been thrown into the incinerator. A strong ending as Oporta apprehended and the guys from Detroit sent home. I'd give "No Bottles" a 4.5 out of 6 stars. JC

Hey gang! Great group, and the grooviest spot for H5O on the Web! Big question to ask here, what do e know of Jack's personal record collection and tastes? I figure he was a big Jazz guy, after playing a tortured Trumpet player in Route 66(?) And, the 5-O episode with Nancy Wilson, where he makes a point of telling her character he knew her from the old days and bought her 78(?) the day it was released. What I wanna know is, did Jack dig Chet Baker and did they ever hang together? The both emoted so well, one with his acting the other with his horn. I like to think Jack had shelves and shelves of Jazz Lp's, maybe a reel-to-reel when he was painting and wanted the music to be continuous. Thinking high-end Japanese stereo equipment, maybe ever a QUAD system! How 1970's! When hearing the great art of Chet Baker or seeing the equally great acting of Jack Lord it's easy to get caught up in how great they both were and imagine their shared artistic bond.

Chick, oh yeah “No Bottles” sure is a keeper!!! I dig that one more and more each time I watch it. Season 4 kicks off strong with “Highest Castle” (a noir-like mystery) but it’s “No Bottles” that really knocks my socks off and tells me that GRITTY FIVE-O has arrived. As many have noted season 4 is where the show got more edgy and more seedy (and more urban??) and this is the episode that started it all. We have grimy hoods, garbage trucks, incinerators burning garbage (and bodies!!), hookers, and the greasy gangster himself - Johnny Oporta!! Henry Darrow totally rocks in that part and really chews up the part with relish!! He’s gotta be my favorite season 4 villain and one of the best gangsters in the series! Mr. Mike in his review says that “Darrow is channeling Kirk Douglas” :D but I’m not sure I quite see that. Still, he’s dynamite!!! He repartee with McGarrett is classic!! Great Morton Stevens score too, with some hip passages and of course that mechanical sound of the garbage truck on the soundtrack!!

“Finished, Johnny. All pau”. Season 4 was a gas, baby! A real gas!!!

Johnny Oh-Porta be a dynamite heavy and you got that great throw down between Steve-O & Ron Feinberg, who doin all that incineratin for Johnny. But the best is McGarrett sendin that mainland gangster cat back to the Motor City: “You tell your friends in Detroit the deal is off — Permanently.”

Jus check out the folks watchin Jack at the Honolu airport, how they stargazed by The Lord. Maaaan, Steve McGarrett like a 70s Law Enforcement Elvis!

Mr. Mike & Classic HFO Regulars.
I'm impressed by the results Mr. Mike calculated. The forum regulars and some additional fans have created a solid comprehensive list. No real head scratchers. Hookman, Nine Dragons, Over Fifty? Steal, Vashon Trilogy some of the best in the series. Good to see The Singapore File has vaulted higher. It was right near the cut line. Looks safe right now. Other FAVS of mine Draw Me A Killer and Cry, Lie appear to make the list as well. Always good to hear from Big Chicken. Surprised to see We Hang Our Own in the Top 24 but Col. Farraday was an interesting character. Mr. Mike and some regulars made good points that Col. Farraday appeared to be of strong mind and health. Strange Cam would return and be ready to take leadership of the ranch. The only real weakness in We Hang Our Own is the kidnapping of Larry. McG was worried the Colonel might be angry enough to do something. Hard to believe Chin or Duke wasn't placed on surveillance detail at Larry's home. They would have stopped Colonel's ranch hands at Larry's place. Only about a day and a half voting left. JC

I did follow up with regard to the isolated music tracks, by the way. He said that they could probably get 5 episodes on a Blu-Ray disc depending on the bitrate.

Some of the titles I would like to add, which includes this music only option include:

PILOT (Cocoon)
SAMURAI
FORTY FEET HIGH AND IT KILLS
A THOUSAND PARDONS, YOU’RE DEAD ( Stevens Emmy Winner)
SINGAPORE FILE
TROUBLE IN MIND
OVER 50? STEAL
HIGHEST CASTLE, DEEPEST GRAVE
DEATH IS A COMPANY POLICY
I’M A FAMILY CROOK - DON’T SHOOT
HOOKMAN (Stevens Emmy Winner)
THE 100,000 NICKEL (Broughton Emmy Nomination)
HOW TO STEAL A MASTERPIECE
MURDER - EYES ONLY
RETIRE IN SUNNY HAWAII - FOREVER
HONOR IS AN UNMARKED GRAVE
TURKEY SHOOT AT MAKAPUU
NINE DRAGONS
ASSAULT ON THE PALACE
UP THE REBELS
WOE TO WO FAT

At the VERY LEAST, including the music option for THE PILOT, SAMURAI, A THOUSAND PARDONS, HOOKMAN and WO TO WO FAT is a must. At least the two Emmy Winning scores by Morton Stevens would be included.

Perhaps, Mike, you could pass this along to CBS to be considered for
a possible Blu Ray release....thanks:)

Honor Is An Unmarked Grave is a classic mystery and a masterpiece. It's a definite FAV of mine. Outstanding photography and writing. It succeeds for many reasons to me. Travis Marshall is a colorful character. He's intelligent and sharp discovering the grave of the missing Brian Henderson. Marshall an author and lawyer definitely has a story. Agatha Henderson is a matriarch type who has some wealth and trying to keep a secret. However, the discovery of Brian's remains means a Five O investigation. The acting is excellent by entire cast Agatha, Travis, McG, Paul, etc. Marshall investigates and digs closer to the truth. Too bad he's silenced B4 he can write the book. Probably somewhere in the Number 12 to 20 range in FAV Classic HFO episodes all time. JC

Review of “Honor Is An Unmarked Grave” (Season 8)

Jack Lord’s knowledge of the arts showed throughout “Honor is an Unmarked Grave.” He applied the principles of photography to achieve rich, full, and deep scenes. Consider these principles and how he used them:

Framing. In the following picture, the camera has panned from the ocean to the cemetery. A shot of a Japanese structure set the scene for the Japanese influences in the episode. And, then, we saw the grave diggers framed between a stand of tall grasses and a tree with additional greenery before and behind the grave diggers. That told us that this was where we needed to focus, because this was where the story began.

Use of Color. In a play that was basically film noir, the flowers flanking the sidewalk in the Henderson garden added startling contrast. Similarly, Agatha Henderson's sunny yellow hat was a striking contrast to the black mourning clothes she wore throughout the episode, except in the flashback. As an aside, the hat belonged to Marie Lord, Jack's wife, in real life.

The use of color returned when McGarrett visited Agatha Henderson on her lanai, as she arranged flowers. Now, instead of flanking the characters, the flowers stood between McGarrett and Mrs. Henderson as if they were (1) showing the emotional and philosophical divide that existed between the two characters, (2) warding off the unpleasantness his visit represented to her, and (3) representing her lofty position over everyone and everything around her, including him.

Establishing viewpoint through camera angles. We saw this best illustrated at Koji's funeral. At first, we saw Agatha Henderson standing with another woman, who clearly was grieving. When Chin Ho arrived, however, Mrs. Henderson turned her head as though she were wondering why Five-0 was there. A shot taken from an elevated corner in the crypt shows that, while other mourners were stricken with grief, Agatha Henderson seemed determined to remain in control.

These principles from among the twelve basic principles for creating photographs provide an example of just how much attention Jack paid to detail. His use of symbolism worked together with these principles to create an episode that was nothing short of expertly crafted by an artist who strove for perfection.

The Bells Toll at Noon is 4; Draw Me a Killer is 5.

Neither of these totals change the top 24 which includes some 3-star episodes where a choice has to be made as to which ones will be in the final list. But maybe all these 3-star ones could be included. I dunno how many episodes you can get on a Blu-Ray disc. A review of the Rockford Blu-Rays suggests you can put 5 or even 6 episodes on one disc, I think if you use double-layer discs. But whether the quality would suffer is another question. There is a prominent review of the Rockford Blu-Ray set at blu-ray.com which is extremely negative.

I agree about Honor is an Unmarked Grave. To quote from my own review: "The script by Bud Freeman is not only very funny at times, but also structured in such a way that you don't know what is really going on until the end, when several plot issues are finally revealed and summed up. ... The excellent score by Morton Stevens sounds at times like Bernard Herrmann and adds to the sense of unease; the color photography is also outstanding." It also includes an exceptional performance by Eileen Heckart, who gives Jack Lord a run for the money in the acting department, and Elissa in a bikini! But I did not include this in my selection; it would definitely be in a subsidiary selection like "Other shows that you should pay attention to."

I too think that Over Fifty? Steal! is overrated. I don't think I would give this four stars any more. I included that in my 24 because that was the last one to choose and I was grabbing at straws. I think I will demote this and put in The Ransom, because we need a Zulu-centric episode (at least one). Other episodes which would also be demoted on my review pages would be A Lion in the Streets, Number One With A Bullet and (yes) Nine Dragons (it has some issues, though it is still my favorite show).

I also agree with the comments on The Bells Toll at Noon. The ending of this is exactly right. I don't know why there was a huge kerfuffle over this show when a poll on the ninth season was done at IMDb. Wasn't this even chosen as the WORST episode of the season in that poll?

Disappointed that no one else listed "The Joker's Wild, Man, Wild". I thought that was an excellent episode.

I was never a huge fan of Over 50? Steal! It was okay, but I thought it was overrated.

:!clap: Quite possibly the best ending in the entire series! Superb stuff! Why some people have an issue with that scene just baffles me. It's pretty clear that the man is seriously sick. I mean he watches old movies and then goes out and re-enacts those murders while doing voice impersonations. Is he sick? Of course he is. There's definitely more than just revenge at play here.

Perhaps, the most notable aspect of all in “The Bells Toll at Noon” is the logical progression as McGarrett works through the case. A torn ticket stub is found atop the roof from which Johnny Kling (Rich Little) shot Charlie Hazard (Kevin O’Connor). Is it evidence or a red herring? We don't know until we see Johnny Kling completely absorbed in the movie "The Roaring Twenties" (1939) at the Varsity Theatre. And, then, McGarrett visits Kling's apartment and sees the movie posters on the walls and, of course, the rifle that was used to kill Hazard. That leads McGarrett and Danno to the theater, where they watch the ending of "White Heat" (1949) and know where Johnny Kling and Paul Thayler (Don Knight) are going -- the Aloha Refinery.

And, then, there are the human interactions: Kwan Hi Lim is miffed by the police intrusion into his projection booth. To have him and Jorie Remus in the same episode is extra special. Jorie Remus plays wonderfully kooky women, and she outdoes herself in "The Bells Toll at Noon." I think she remembered every detail but didn't want to play all her cards when she was questioned. That she really did remember the details comes through when she works with the police artist. Even so, Danno says she made several bad starts before she was able to give an accurate description of the man who had rented the cabin.

Johnny Kling is allowed to show off Rich Little's talent as an impersonator. His impersonation of Sydney Greenstreet discussing Humphrey Bogart’s appearance in “The Maltese Falcon” (1941) at Start Anew is excellent. That, at the end of the episode, he segues from a reasonably sane man into an impersonation of Jimmy Cagney's performance of "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy" from the movie "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (1942) and then freezes in an almost catatonic state shows just how sick Johnny Kling really is.

As for the conflict between such insanity and the fact that he possesses enough mental ability to plan the three murders, that will be for the court to decide. All McGarrett can do is discover the facts of the case. About the only way anyone could solve this case would be to watch the movies that inspired Kling's actions, and McGarrett and Danno did just that. That allowed us to watch a bit of those old movies and to listen to a bit of the old music.

The main thing I like about this episode is the artistry that went into it. First, it draws from three Jimmy Cagney movies. Then the 78 rpm recording of "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" is played on an old Victrola. The record player's ending needle sound continues as the scene ends and the Five-0 wave comes up. Kling wraps up James Kellman (Milton Selzer) as a mummy and has him fall through a doorway, just as happened in “Public Enemy” (1931). McGarrett and Chin Ho are baffled, at first, and McGarrett likens the disjointed evidence to hieroglyphics, which cannot be read without the Rosetta Stone. In the projection room, when McGarrett needs to learn how the next movie ends, he uses an old Moviola to fast forward through the first part of the reel and reach the scene atop the oil storage tank at the oil refinery and learn that Kling intends to blow up himself and Paul Thayler.

Very artistic, but then, that's what makes episodes directed by Jack Lord unmistakably his.

Examining The Bells Toll At Noon. I think this is a good episode but outside my Top 20. Richard Little is larger than life as Johnny Kling the comedian. A former addict getting his life back on track. He starts eliminating those involved with the death of a young woman he secretly loved. They got her hooked on drugs again and she died. Kling shoots a drug dealer Hazard who sold the drugs to Makameha. The shot disguised by the noon bells at the Church. Kellman is later killed who distributed the drugs to Hazard and whose drugs killed the young woman. He's later wrapped up and falls out of a hotel closet in an incredible scene. Thayler is later kidnapped by Kling. Thayler is the businessman type behind the drug operation. Plenty of good here but a few things bother me. Tommy (Jimmy Borges) at Start Anew talks about Johnny Kling as a once addict but he's getting back on track. Will be on top again. Killing these guys Hazard, Kellman and kidnapping Thayler will lead to HFO involvement. It will undo all his work getting sober now that he will be arrested for the crimes. The old woman hotel owner gives a perfect description of Kling thanks to the sketch artist. This is hard to believe because Danno talks about how the old woman not sure of a description. I also thought the ending was disappointing. Kling goes from his regular self to other characters. McG is able to talk Kling down from the big oil drums. Thayler is lucky to survive. Maybe, a good lawyer could convince a jury Kling was crazy. However, Kling meticulously planned the killings and things. I would give The Bells Toll At Noon 5 stars out of 6. What do you think? JC

"21. Charter for Death"

I feel like we're playing a game of which of these doesn't belong ;)

Anyway it's my least favorite from season 6 so I definitely wouldn't place it on any best-of list. Rats, bubonic plague, quarantine? Yeah not my idea of classic Five-O. The season 1 episode "Face of the Dragon" was a better episode that dealt with the bubonic plague (at least it has some Red Chinese espionage involved) but even that one I was never crazy about.

But, to each his own...

Good to see some more voting for the 50th Anniversary Classic HFO episodes Blue Ray. The 3 Vashons, Hookman, and Over Fifty? Steal are some of the best in the series. Happy to see they will be included. Pretty good lead. It should be interesting if there's a run off for the last few episodes. Mr. Mike giving it another 5 days to Feb 9th. Eminently fair. Everybody has had plenty of time to vote if they are a Classic HFO fan. Congrats Ringfire! Fly Eagles Fly! JC

Hey Maureen - sound like you did some vital and challengin work. Hope you enjoyin retirement, and catchin up on yo Five-O eps on DVD.

And I agree, Chicken seen a bit a that new Five-Zero and It Ain't pretty.:D

Hey John C, thanks for the shout out. Definitely hard to pick them top 24 eps. I think on any given day, I coulda come up with different variants a the top episodes. There are that many exceptional eps! Speakin a Toomey & Lew, coulda included The Payoff, which is almost perfect in it's noir, heist-go-wrong elements or The Listener which have Cerberus, one a Five-O's most memorable psychos. John Louisianna or Target-Cop coulda made it, with the great, great Don Stroud.

But, yeah, I agree Just Lucky, Skinhead and 10K Diamonds are all-timers. Chicken think you can screen em for any newbie to show them just what the Five-O be about.

And for those who picked The Box in they top eps, let me say that is "A true Co-mmand decision, Charlie" :D

If I were to include a season 12 episode (in an attempt to cover the entire 12-year run) it could only be "Woe to Wo Fat". Not only is it the series finale but it's the perfect way to bookend the Blu-Ray set if the first episode included is the "Cocoon" pilot. We can't include too many Wo Fat episodes because there are too many other great episodes but these might be the 2 to include. Plus let's face it - it's one of the better season 12 episodes, certainly more worthy of inclusion than "Good Help" or "Lion in the Streets".

But here I'll just list my 24 favorites (in chronological order):

1. Yesterday Died and Tomorrow Won't Be Born
2. Deathwatch
3. The Box
4. A Bullet for McGarrett
5. The Singapore File
6. The Second Shot
7. The Ransom
8. Over Fifty? Steal
9. The Bomber and Mrs. Moroney
10. ...And I Want Some Candy and a Gun that Shoots
11. Rest in Peace, Somebody
12. Journey Out of Limbo
13. V for Vashon: The Sonny
14. V for Vashon: The Padre
15. V for Vashon: The Grandpappy
16. The Listener
17. Hookman
18. Draw Me a Killer
19. Nightmare in Blue
20. The Young Assassins
21. I'll Kill 'Em Again
22. Target - A Cop
23. The Bells Toll at Noon
24. A Capitol Crime

Just missing the cut:

Tiger by the Tail
Beautiful Screamer
Wednesday, Ladies Free
Secret Witness
McGarrett is Missing
Deadly Persuasion

BIG CHICKEN.
Some inspired choices for the Blue Ray. I like the Just Lucky,I Guess, Skinhead, and Ten Thousand Diamonds And A Heart choices. As Mr. Mike and the Classic HFO forum regulars have opined, it's difficult to narrow it down to 24. So many excellent episodes. I forgot FOB Honolulu on my 1st list. That's a JC FAV. I'm a big fan of East Wind, Ill Wind. Mrs. Sananarek was a beautiful and classy woman. Great photography and story. I enjoy A Lion In The Streets and Number One With A Bullet. However, it's tough to slide a Season 10-12 episode in the Top 24. Hopefully, Toomey and Lew will give you a stack of those Silver Certificates. They have cooled off by now. They say Seattle might get an NHL team soon. JC

Maureen Elise Brockmann say: "The characters in the "old" Five 0 were men - in the new five o they are little boys."

Right on, Maureen! Them Five-Zeros Mo’ like pretty boys. And to par-phrase baller Steph Curry: 'Fightin crime's a Man's Game!' :D

Hey Ringfire - I agree wit u bro - other than maybe "Up the Rebels" (which feel like season 9) hard to see season 10-12 eps bein included in tops cept’ for the sake a 'completeness.'

That said, I’d be cool with 'Descent of the Torches' in the set. Good choice, Jeff! Would be great to catch in B-ray for Big Isle scenery, an Chicken dig that's is really bout Hawaiian myth n history and is heavy on the McGarrett Dee-tectin vibe. Probably Chicken's fave late season ep.

Hey John from Pitt - look likes Columbia House got Big Chicken in they top eps, man. Can't deny that Big Chicken is Big Time, brudda! An witout no further ado, here’s the top 25:

Cocoon
Nine Dragons
Vashon – Son
Vashon – Pops
Vashon – Granddad
Just Lucky, I Guess
Hookman
Trouble in Mind
Painted Daisies
Deathwatch
Nightmare in Blue
Singapore File
The Ransom
Ten Thousand Diamonds and a Heart
3,000 Crooked Miles to Honolulu
Rest in Peace, Somebody
Jinn Who Clears Way
Engaged to be Buried/Cry, Lie
Skinhead
The Young Assassins
Man in a Steel Frame
Bells Toll at Noon
Pig in A Blanket
Draw Me a Killer
The Box

Though I did lean on some faves, also tried to select the All-timers and eps that represent the real essence a the show.

"Nightmare in Blue" was a great select by you Mr. Mike, so Ise include it as well. That was actually the 1st Five-O ep, Chicken ever caught. And as Ringfire's man Jerry Parks would say: It really flipped me, babeey! (or does Allan actually say that).

Lastly, H50 FOREVER - thanks for the additional scene locales, will look to hit Bellows & Lanikai Beaches when I back in the Islands.

Aloha!
