Hawaii Five-O: Selected Research. Prepared for James MacArthur February 1993

In August of 2025, a suitcase with memorabilia (for want of a better word) connected with James MacArthur was discovered which contained two spiral-bound binders, each about 3 inches thick. The title page of the first one says “Hawaii Five-O: Selected Research. Prepared for James MacArthur February 1993."

The information in these binders is divided up by season. The first volume covers episodes from 1968 to 1973 (seasons 1-6), and the second one is 1974 to 1979 (seasons 7-11). Each episode has lists of the cast, production crew, a synopsis, production notes, and a list of shooting locations as well as sometimes other information as to who did stunt/double work, for example.

The information sounds like it was pulled together from various sources, perhaps an attempt to reboot the series or produce movies based on it, compiled by someone at the Five-O franchise and/or CBS.

I am putting this information for each episode on my site under the link of JM RESEARCH at the end of each review's TRIVIA section. Most of this information is in the form of the original sheets which were photographed and then changed into PDF files. (The condition of these binders was too fragile to try scanning most of the pages.) I originally started retyping some of the information from these photographed pages for the first season, but instead I am going to replace these retyped pages with the PDFs of the original photos and do all other seasons with just the photos. When I did a poll of people as to which they preferred, they were unanimous that the original sheets were more interesting. However, there are still some pages which are retyped, because the originals had a lot of damage to them.

There is no information for either the pilot episode ("Cocoon") or the twelfth season, because James MacArthur did not appear in either of those.

Thanks to Debi Smolinske for providing this material! -- MQ
