I would post this in the Five-Zero forum, but I have posted several things there and NOT ONE OF THEM HAS A REPLY!!
by ringfire211 » Wed Aug 10, 2016 10:10 pmI have ZERO interest what Lenkov is doing with the new MacGYVER. I don't care about the new FIVE-0 so I care even less about the new MacGYVER. There's so much of the old MacGYVER that I haven't seen (and maybe will never get around to) so why would I even bother with this lame excuse for a remake/reboot?

...which is exactly as it should be.

...which is exactly as it should be.Which is to say that no disrespect is intended towards Mr. Mike's postings. But honestly I can't even be bothered to read what Lenkov is blabbing about. It's just background noise to me. When I start reading his stuff my eyes glaze over. Yawn!
The new Five-0 honestly only has one thing going for it - that's the beautiful Hawaiian scenery. That's it! I guess it would be hard to screw that up, even though they did manage to do just that early in the series with that yellow tint. But then they fixed that. In particular I'd like to point out the season opener with the drone attack (don't know what it's called). Overall a stupid episode (a crappy-looking CGI plane lands on Kalakaua Ave??????). But I gotta say that the opening of that episode with an extended sweep over the majestic beauty of Oahu took my breath away!! I had to watch that sequence a few times - mesmerizing!!! Oh, if only we had good stories and good actors to go along with that scenery. Such wasted potential.
by Mr. Mike » Thu Aug 11, 2016 9:20 amRick, I hope Lenkov doesn't get a swelled head over being called "King of the Remake," especially since we are only talking about TWO shows.
Perhaps you didn't make it to the end of the article, where this is what particularly alarmed me:
Lenkov admits the idea of remaking classic shows is now in his blood. The producer even has a few more on his wishlist: “Magnum P.I.” (which he’d like to do after “Hawaii Five-O” ends, following the same succession that took place on CBS in the early 1980s) and “Miami Vice.”
by RickNewportBeach » Thu Aug 11, 2016 9:37 pmThat's correct. Of course no disrespect intended towards Mr. Mike's efforts keeping this forum alive. I had been watching the remake thread go without a comment and thought it was a nice nod to the real deal...
The whole TV series remake genre is uninteresting as shit to me. I can appreciate a good cover of a record, even multiple covers of the same song like Tim Hardin's If I Were a Carpenter covered by Robert Plant, and also by Johnny Cash, among others. Or Led Zeppelin's Dancing Day's covered by The Stone Temple Pilots. Linda Ronstadt on the other hand made a career out of signing covers of other artists hits. Not that all other artist wrote their own songs, but it's all she sang. While she had good pipes I never liked her because all she sang were covers. She was the Lenkov of the 1970's recording industry. Anyway...
Remakes of a TV series and for the most part movies, I just don't see the point. Has there been any remake as good or better than the original? It seems lazy to me ...a kind of ripoff.
No, Mike I did not see the end of the article and it doesn't surprise me that Lenkov would go for more of the same vapid cheesy copycat formula remakes. It is alarming, yes. But then, why wouldn't he? I'm sure the payoff from the fake 5-0 is huge.
by Jeanygoony » Fri Aug 12, 2016 5:54 amOh no, no not a remake of Magnum, just like Jack lord, who is the only McGarrett as far as I am concerned, Tom selleck is the only Magnum. He had a very special sense of humour the rapport between magnum and Higggins can't be replicated.so leave it alone. It just seems producers are short of ideas as they keep trying to remake tv programmes and movies. Some can be a success I know. Five 0 has been a success, but I find it loud and brash, no class, badly acted particularly Scott Caan who just waves his arms about. They talk far two fast. I like that they did include Dennis Chun and Al Harrington. The only episode that was truly outstanding was Honour thy father. S4 ep.10. That was very moving. The only reason I watch it is for the scenery and t remind me of Hawaii. But I watch over and over the original at least the included real local people in the scenes. You never see an old tourist like me in scenes. They are all beach babes and glamorous or good looking extras. As fir Mcgyver I think that could probably be done. It's very inventive and doesn't really matter who plays him. It has a good opening for really good stunts in modern day.
by ringfire211 » Fri Aug 12, 2016 12:26 pmSpeaking of remakes how about that new BEN-HUR hitting theaters right now?
Seriously, shouldn't there be a law against remaking certain films??? How do you remake one of the best films ever made? And how do you top Miklos Rozsa's legendary score? Oh, I know, you hire Marco Beltrami.
Anything for a quick buck.
New Ben-Hur? Blech!!
by Mr. Mike » Fri Aug 12, 2016 6:13 pmI shouldn't really judge this without seeing it, but there is no way I am going to the movie theatres ... I haven't been to the movies for years. I saw a couple of the trailers connected with this remake, they looked hideous.

Same here. No way I'm seeing this at the theater. Honestly I should never see this movie out of principle alone (it's insulting that they would try to remake a perfect film!) but I'll probably end up seeing it at some point, just out of curiosity.
by RickNewportBeach » Sun Aug 14, 2016 10:13 pmWithin the last year I just happened to re watch Ben-Hur. It is the very definition of an epic motion picture. Like a Beatles song, a classic which there is no need to remake for any reason. And in comparing it to what the studios are putting out today, it left me just dumbstruck at how vapid movies have become.
I saw a video ad for the remake that showed a few seconds of the CGI chariot race ...awful. Looked like a cartoon. Check this out about the original chariot race from IMDB...
"The chariot race required 15,000 extras on a set constructed on 18 acres of backlot at Cinecitta Studios outside Rome. Tour buses visited the set every hour. Eighteen chariots were built, with half being used for practice. The race took five weeks to film."
by ringfire211 » Mon Aug 15, 2016 8:46 pmRick, I bought both BEN-HUR and THE TEN COMMANDMENTS together on Blu-Ray as a double-pack a few years back. Both are among the finest films ever made - the very definition of EPIC movie! They sure don't make 'em like they used to. You also have the magnificent scores by Miklos Rozsa and Elmer Bernstein, respectively. You don't hear film scores of that high caliber anymore.
I'm actually surprised that they managed to film that entire chariot race in all its magnificent glory (and back in 1959!!) in just 5 weeks. That's actually pretty good timing. I would have expected something like 2 months or longer. It's one of the most riveting sequences in cinema history and still packs a wallop to this very day! None of this crappy CGI today can compare to the real deal.
